Dear God,
I have been studying how I may compare
Their heartbreak, to theirs
Which of us woke up weeping
Over dead children
Or stolen children
Or children who witness wars
Who counts the bodies?
Who digs them up?
Questions then silences or
Questions then insults
Sunrise marks a new day
For more heartbreak to etch into our nightmares

Dear God,
This dance is a terrible dance
It’s consumed everything in it’s fire
Who advocates for peace now?
All of your apostles are gone
Our children can’t find shelter from the shelling
*
Dear God,
Maybe when you hold them
You can listen to their stories
Store them in an underworld
With the rest of them
With the others waiting to come back
Like grains of sand
Waiting for the ocean to settle
*
Dear God,
The moon is emerging
Lift up their souls, next to it
May they rest in a sky of white field
Clouds shaped like spoons
Ladle full with stars
Will you count the stars?
Will you count the bodies?
Who’s counting?
Don’t they count?
Who’s bodies count?

Dear God,
Did you know,
War is good for business
Did you know,
Freedom is not a right after all
Did you know,
We are yelling this prayer
And it’s just an echo bouncing back from the hard stone
